Product Brochure

A high value is placed on prenatal care and a healthy lifestyle of mothers-to-be. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends1 four healthy lifestyle components during pregnancy: appropriate weight gain, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and appropriate and timely vitamin and mineral supplementation. But what is often overlooked, of equal importance, is maintaining health and wellness before you conceive and after the baby comes.*

According to the American Pregnancy Association, preconception nutrition research has shown that food and healthy nutrition are tied to fertility, and you should begin making healthy changes three months to a year before you conceive.2 At the other end of the spectrum, women who breastfeed should pay attention to the calories and nutrients their bodies are taking in. New mothers are likely to have stopped taking a prenatal vitamin for nutritional supplementation. Because of this, nutritional supplementation to meet daily requirements may be helpful. Further, the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals recommends an additional 500 Kcal/day be taken in by lactating women. As much as 350 mg of calcium is transferred daily from mother to baby through breast milk; and, this amount may increase if the lactating woman is underweight, exercises vigorously, or is breastfeeding more than one infant.3*

Ingredients

Protein (Pea protein, Rice protein):  11 g
Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. The body uses protein to build and repair tissues, as well as produce enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. Unlike fat and carbohydrates, the body does not store protein, and therefore has no reservoir to draw on when it needs a new supply. The amino acids that make up protein are the building blocks of your body's cells, but also of the baby in pregnant moms. It's important to get enough protein throughout pregnancy, but especially during the second and third trimesters, when the baby is growing the fastest. Similarly, a breastfeeding mom also has increased dietary needs as she needs extra energy and nutrients to produce breast milk. Protein is one of these nutrients. The pea protein used in the DNA Pre + Post Natal Shake is highly soluble and meets the needs of supplying protein by offering a non-whey option that’s free of major allergens.*

DHA [from algal oil (life’s DHA™)]: 100 mg
Omega-3 fatty acids are considered nutritionally essential for human health. Docosahexaenoic acid, also known as DHA, plays a very important role in supporting brain health and is a very important structural component of the brain phospholipids, as well as the lipids in the nervous system. In fact, about 60 percent of the brain is made up of fat, most of which is DHA.  As the human body cannot naturally synthesize fatty acids, they must come from the diet. DHA is naturally found throughout the body and is most abundant in the brain, eyes and heart. Just as calcium is essential for building strong bones, DHA ensures that the cells in the brain, retina, heart and other parts of the nervous system develop and function properly throughout all stages of life. Its role of supporting brain health and normal neural function is extremely well documented and supported by clinical research. Current research suggests adequate levels of DHA may support the normal cognitive development of a fetus, and positive impact a woman’s mood after pregnancy.  The high demands of the fetus and maternal requirements for DHA seem to point to a decline of this nutrient during pregnancy and lactation. While omega-3s support normal fetal neurodevelopment, research also indicates that omega-3s may support a normal birth weight as well. Since breast milk naturally contains DHA, it is important that breastfeeding women consume this nutrient to support both their health and the health of their developing infant. Life’s DHA is a fish-free and sustainable source of DHA from algae.*

Vitamin C (as ascorbic acid): 60 mg
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that has a number of biological functions. It promotes normal tissue repair and healing. Additionally, vitamin C supports your immune system. The female body's requirement for vitamin C increases during pregnancy as this vitamin promotes the normal growth of the baby and supports building strong bones and teeth. It also supports absorption of another key nutrient during pregnancy, iron.*

Vitamin D3 (as cholecalciferol): 400 IU
Women have an increased requirement for vitamin D during pregnancy. The main function of vitamin D is to promote the normal regulation of serum calcium concentrations. Vitamin D enhances the intestinal absorption of calcium, primarily in the duodenum and jejunum by supporting the synthesis of calcium-binding proteins to promote healthy calcium absorption and retention.*

Vitamin E (as d-alpha-tocopheryl acetate): 20.7 mg
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin proven to be a strong antioxidant, and is absorbed by the mother and transported to the fetus. It promotes structural and functional maintenance of skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle. It also supports the formation of red blood cells, promotes healthy cardiovascular function and enhances the immune system.*

Thiamin (as thiamin mononitrate): 3 mg
Thiamin plays an important role in carbohydrate metabolism and nerve function. Thiamin is required for a healthy nervous system and assists in the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).*

Riboflavin: 3 mg
Vitamin B2 is a water-soluble vitamin that promotes the body’s ability to process amino acids and fats, activate vitamin B6 and folic acid, and support the normal conversion of carbohydrates into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the fuel the body uses to function. Vitamin B2 promotes energy production, which increases during pregnancy.*

Niacin (as niacinamide): 20 mg
Niacin promotes normal energy production. Vitamin B3 works with vitamin B1 and vitamin B2 to support the release of energy from carbohydrates. Energy production increases during pregnancy.*

Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxal 5-phosphate): 6 mg
Vitamin B6 is the master vitamin for processing amino acids the building blocks of all proteins and some hormones. Vitamin B6 supports the production and breakdown of many amino acids and also promotes the production of the hormones serotonin, melatonin and dopamine, which are vital to your fetus's developing brain and nervous system.*

Folate [as (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid, glucosamine salt (Quatrefolic®)]: 810 mcg
Folic acid is mainly found in fruits and vegetables. Dark, leafy greens, oranges, orange juice, beans, peas and Brewer’s yeast are the best sources. Folic acid plays a key role by boosting the benefits of B12 supplementation. These two B vitamins join forces and work together in maintaining normal red blood cells. Folic acid assists in the normal utilization of amino acids and proteins, as well as supporting the construction of the material for DNA and RNA synthesis, which is necessary for all bodily functions. Scientific studies have found that when working in tandem with folic acid, B12 is capable of promoting normal homocysteine levels. This works toward supporting a healthy cardiovascular and nervous system.*

Quatrefolic® is the glucosamine salt of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, the most active form of folate, as it is structurally analogous to the reduced and active form of folic acid. Because this form is naturally present in the body, it is much more bioavailable for its biological action without having to be metabolized in the body. This patented ingredient also provides greater s
Optimal vitamin A intake is advisable during the pre-conception period before pregnancy. Adequate amounts of vitamin A help to promote the health of the baby by promoting normal growth and development of the embryo and fetus, and supporting genes that determine the sequential development of organs in embryonic development. Beta-carotene is a nutrient from plants that the body converts into vitamin A.*

Vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin): 120 mcg
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that supports normal nerve cell activity, DNA replication and production of the mood-affecting substance SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine). Vitamin B12 (consumed during pregnancy) promotes the health of the baby.*

Biotin: 300 mcg
Biotin, a water-soluble B vitamin, acts as a coenzyme in the metabolism of protein, fats and carbohydrates. Women have an increased requirement for biotin during pregnancy, and a biotin deficiency may occur in as many as 50 percent of pregnant women.*

Pantothenic acid (as D-calcium pantothenate): 15 mg
Pantothenic acid, also called vitamin B5, is a water-soluble vitamin involved in the Kreb’s cycle of energy production and promotes the normal production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Pantothenic acid works together with vitamin B1, vitamin B2 and vitamin B3 to support the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the fuel our body uses to function. It also supports the normal production, , transport and release of energy from fats.*

Calcium: 600 mg
Another important nutrient in an expectant mother’s diet is calcium. Calcium needs increase significantly during pregnancy. Healthy levels of calcium during pregnancy may help the mother maintain normal blood pressure and water balance during pregnancy. A substantial transfer of calcium occurs between the mother and the fetus throughout pregnancy, allowing the baby's bone and teeth formation. In the first six months, the mother stores up calcium in her own bones. When its skeletal growth reaches its peak in the last three months, the fetus draws on the mother's calcium storage. This is when the consumption of high calcium-containing foods such as milk and milk products must be increased to support the health of the mother's teeth and bones.*

Iron [as ferric pyrophosphate (SunActive®)]: 18 mg
Iron is an important mineral found in prenatal vitamins and is responsible for helping the mother and the baby’s blood to carry oxygen. As an essential mineral, iron is part of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of the blood. The demand for iron, essential for blood formation, is also significantly increased during pregnancy because the mother's blood volume increases and the fetal red blood cells have to be developed. In order to support fetal tissue growth, blood volume and contents must grow to help feed these tissues, including red blood cells. Further, about one-third of the mother’s iron storage will be passed on to her developing baby in order to form its blood and to be stored for future use.*

Phosphorus: 176 mg
Phosphorus is a mineral that supports strong bones in the mother and developing baby. It's also supports normal muscle contractions, blood clotting, kidney function, nerve conduction, repair of tissues and cells, and normal heart rhythm. Phosphorus helps the body generate and use energy.*

Iodine (as potassium iodide): 150 mcg
Iodine, a trace mineral, is primarily concentrated in the thyroid gland (where approximately 80% of the body’s supply is found). Iodine promotes the normal function of thyroid hormones, which promote normal development and energy metabolism. A moderate deficiency in iodine decreases the production of the thyroid hormones. About 20 percent of the world is iodine deficient. Iodine deficiency can also affect brain health. Recent research has shown that those on vegetarian diets or salt-restricted diets may be at an increased risk of iodine deficiency. Iodine also is present in the salivary glands, the gastric mucosa and in the lactating mammary gland. Along with iodized salt, fish and sea vegetables are rich sources of iodine. Iodine is also present in animal products, such as eggs, milk, meat and poultry, often because most animal feeds are enriched with iodine in industrialized countries.*

Magnesium (as dimagnesium malate, magnesium citrate and magnesium oxide): 468 mg
Magnesium, an essential mineral, functions as a coenzyme to promote normal nerve and muscle function, regulation of body temperature, energy metabolism, DNA and RNA synthesis, and the formation of bones. It can be used to promote head comfort and to promote bone health. The majority of the body's magnesium, about 60 percent, is found in the bones. Magnesium is involved in over 300 metabolic reactions and is necessary for every major biological process. Nearly 75 percent of the American population fails to consume enough magnesium in their diets; therefore, supplements may be warranted in some cases, particularly those concerned with bone metabolism. Dietary sources that include magnesium are artichokes, nuts, beans, whole grains and shellfish.*

Zinc (as zinc citrate): 15 mg
Zinc is an essential mineral that is a component of more than 300 enzymes that support normal healing, fertility in adults and growth in children, protein synthesis, cell reproduction, vision, immune function, and protection against free radicals, among other functions. Zinc supports normal growth and development during pregnancy.*

Selenium (as selenium amino acid chelate): 85 mcg
Selenium functions as an antioxidant enzyme, and also promotes normal growth and use of iodine in thyroid function. It supports a healthy immune system. Selenium supports the antioxidant effect of vitamin E, promotes cardiovascular and skin health, and a healthy immune system. Selenium plays a role in the body's ability to protect cells from free radicals. It promotes the defense against the toxicity of reactive oxygen species, regulation of the thyroid hormone metabolism and the regulation of the redox state of cells. The selenium content of the soil in which plants are grown determines the amount of selenium contained in the food. Good dietary sources of selenium include nuts, unrefined grains, brown rice, wheat germ and seafood.*

Copper (as copper gluconate): 1 mg
Copper is an essential trace element present both in the diet and in the human body. It promotes the normal absorption and utilization of iron. It is also part of the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase (SOD). Copper promotes the normal creation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy the body uses to function. Copper promotes normal infant development, red and white blood cell maturation, iron transport, bone strength, cholesterol metabolism, myocardial contractility, glucose metabolism, brain development and immune function.*

Manganese (as manganese sulfate): 0.7 mg
Manganese supports normal formation of connective tissue, bones, and blood-clotting factors. It supports fat and carbohydrate metabolism, calcium absorption and help maintain normal blood sugar regulation. Manganese also promotes normal brain and nerve function. Manganese may promote the normal use of nutrients including biotin, thiamin, ascorbic acid and choline.*

Chromium (as ChromeMate® chromium polynicotinate): 42 mcg
Chromium is a vital trace mineral that forms part of a compound in the body known as glucose tolerance factor (GTF), which is involved in maintaining normal blood sugar levels and, possibly, in helping to control appetite. Chromium also promotes normal glucose metabolism, and helps maintain healthy levels of cholesterol and other lipids in the blood. There are also claims that it supports weight loss and increases muscle mass. More than 90 percent of American diets do not provide the recommended amount of chromium. Chromium is found in small amounts in many foods. Food sources of chromium include brewer's yeast, whole-grain cereals, broccoli, prunes, mushrooms, beer, spices, brown sugar, coffee, tea, wine and meat products.*

Molybdenum (as sodium molybdate): 50 mcg
Molybdenum is an essential trace mineral that supports the proper function of certain enzyme-dependent processes, including the metabolism of iron, which is extremely important for pregnant women.*

Fibersol-2® (Soluble fiber glucose polymer complex): 3.5 g
Fibersol-2 has a positive impact on the elimination of wastes and colon cleansing, as well as helping to maintain balanced bowels, helping support normal bowel regularity and fecal volume and supporting healthy digestive function. It is a safe (GRAS) maltodextrin, easily mixed in water and carries no flavor. Because it is high in naturally occurring chemical bonds that remain undigested even in the digestive tract, it helps to support overall health by helping to maintain normal cholesterol levels, helping to maintain normal blood glucose levels and promoting immune health. Some studies have also shown that Fibersol® can provide an increased feeling of satiety, leaving consumers feeling fuller for longer periods of time. This trademarked ingredient has far-reaching clinical research to substantiate its role of support for maintaining intestinal regularity.
